When I've gone to Yosemite the past few years I've stayed in Mariposa. It is on Cal. 140 that runs east west from Merced to Yosemite. We usually camp but there is some hotels and motels in Mariposa. An interesting 49er mining museum is there also. A really nice alternative is to come into Yosemite on Cal. 41 from Fresno. The entrance from Cal 41 is very dramatic. I've had friends drive and extra 3 hours from San Francisco to show their friends the park from that entrance. There is also a nice historic hotel at Wawona on that route. The Wawona Hotel of course. Here's a link.

On the cheaper end there are some tent cabins in the park but they fill up fast in the busy season.

I love the desert, the wide open sky, the moutains so near looking yet so far, the billion star nights. I hate Las Vegas; but I've used its 49 cent breakfasts at 3am. I even like the heat, the white sands, gleaming under full moons, the silence, the fierce life. The gambling rooms with their one-arm bandits and the surprising number of Chinese grannies and grandpas, sad quarter filled cups being fed into the hands of Bugsy-style fate. Now, price bubbles burst over the landscape, as Strontium-90 clouds used to in the 50s. Class society flattens the world around us as ignoramuses nod with approval at kitsch glamour posing as commonsense. Commodification is hollowing US out.

Albert, Thanks for your kind words. I appreciate them. Some people think that we are too negative, but I think we do try to contrast the good, the bad, and the ugly. As we travel, we start to put things together and see connections we hadn't noticed before. Michael
